“The Lilly corporate values reflect the importance we place on diversity. Included in these values is a respect for all people worldwide; integrity that functions on the very highest standards of honesty, ethical behavior, and exemplary moral character; and excellence, which is reflected in our continued desire for improvement. Diversity within our company is something we respect and strongly encourage.”

- Eli Lilly & Company, in 2005.

“On paper, they have some of the best strategies and policies (to promote diversity) that any corporation has. But they're only on paper.”

- Cassandra Welch, former employee, Eli Lilly & Company, in 2006.

“Discrimination against any individual or group is inconsistent with our long-held core values and is inconsistent with the way we do business. One goal of our employee policies is that none of our employees ever have reason to believe that they have been treated unfairly.”

- Carla Cox, Corporate-Communications Spokesperson, Eli Lilly & Company, in 2006.

Another Distraction for Lilly

In April 2006, one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies, Eli Lilly & Company (Lilly), faced a federal lawsuit that raised some serious questions about the company's human rights policies and practices.

The case filed with the US District Court, Southern District of Indiana, USA, alleged that the company discriminated against its African American employees on racial grounds. The lawsuit claimed that the African American employees working at Lilly faced a disparity in wages, promotions, performance evaluations, and discipline (Refer to Exhibit I for US federal laws against discrimination).
